Wanting to use some scrap cherry wood from another project I mixed that with walnut to create an attractive checkerboard pattern. I created a leveling jig for a router to more carefully flatten across the end grain where a planer might tear out the fibers. I sanded then treated the board with coconut oil and beeswax to safely protect it.

An end-grain cutting board made from walnut and cherry scraps

End-grain cutting boards are great for extending life in the kitchen. With the wood fibers aligned top to bottom instead of across a board, a knife cuts in between them allowing the fibers to close back up. This extends both the life of the board and the knife as well as being easier to clean without permanent scores that fill up with debris.
