An Innovative Material

Chitin is formed into SEAD packaging through compression and heat in a three step pressing process.  It has the incredible ability to self-bind without needing additional agents.  Along with its high performing physical and agricultural qualities, this makes it an ideal material to aid in the use and cultivation of seeds.

A milled press form is used to create a a flat bottom half and pod-containing top half.  Seeds are placed in the pods and the two halves are joined in a final pressing with a thin layer of chitosan 'glue'. Repeated seed labels are laser engraved so the species can always be identified as parts of the package are broken off and used.

Made out of waste from the seafood processing industry, SEAD facilitates the distribution and cultivation of native and diverse plants from seed to soil
  • Seafood is the most traded food commodity in the world

  • Shells make up to 60% of shellfish weight

  • 6-8 million tons of shell waste are produced annually

  • Chitin is a shell extract with high performing properties

  • It is the second most abundant biopolymer in the world

  • It makes up to 40% of seafood shell content

Made from compressed chitin, a seafood shell extract, the SEAD Pod is made up of protective pods each containing seed. The Chitin offers agricultural benefits when planted in the ground and protection along with extended shelf life when stored.

Break It

Simply break the desired pod or pods from the bar along perforated lines

Crush It
