A Healthy Binder

Strata is bound with a biodegradable adhesive derived from dairy-based casein and wood based tannin was developed through research and iterative testing.  These elements bind the upcycled sawdust and provide beneficial performance qualities like durability as well as moisture, fire, and heat resistance,

I developed a series of press mold prototypes built to apply several hundred pounds of compression to  loose sawdust mixed with a specific proportion of casein based binder.  Different colors and varieties of sawdust can be layered for visual effect.  Designed with scaled up manufacturing in mind, the largest mold creates a long pressed block that can be sliced to create many consistent, layered tiles- the pattern of which is revealed in the cross-section.

Strata explores material applications of the sawdust collected from New York City based wood shops.  Inspired by the way sawdust collects and builds up over time in these spaces, Strata celebrates its aesthetic and narrative, reframing how we value waste and where we can look when sourcing for the constructed environment.

I see Strata used for decorative interior wall surfaces creating stylized, attention getting accent walls and details.  Tiles of different scale and patterning make it easy to get different styles and feelings.  Other low ware uses work as well, like counter sides or end tables.
