The soda ash or sodium carbonate creates a red ‘blushing’ effect on the clay body during firing. After the soda wash I lightly apply one or two different glazes with a sponge to give it color complexity but still allow the blushed details of the carvings to come through.

An exploration in carving and glaze technique for functional ceramics. Inspired by mandalas, I carved designs into stoneware bowls and wanted to find a glaze application that could enhance the patterns in the clay body rather than obscure them. Here I used a diluted soda ash solution on the clay body before glazing.
